Decluttering : The Journey from being Overwhelmed to Optimized!

Having clutter around oneself can cause anxiety, irritability and makes one feel overwhelmed all the time. It even hampers our ability to lead a healthy and peaceful life. A simple step of decluttering our surrounding is what it takes to calm ourselves down, but we often don’t do it.

Barbara Hemphill, a productivity expert, trademarked a very wise phrase- "Clutter is postponed decisions". This phrase fairly applies to all forms of clutter including emotional, physical, mental and even to digital cluttering. All these forms are a product of decisions that we choose to postpone, rather than doing it in that particular time frame. There goes a saying, “Change is a result of action, and action is a result of decision”. This really got me thinking in terms of where actually the problem lied. If we choose to decide and act upon it, change is bound to happen.

Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful. - William Morris

GETTING RID OF THE PHYSICAL CLUTTER:

When it comes to the physical clutter, it is important to evaluate things based on need vs. want. This truly will help you out in throwing or donating stuff that you don’t actually need around you. Also, by cutting out the clutter from your home, you are only surrounded by things you love, which in turn makes you happy. You are literally pulling out the chaos to create the calm. The result is you would become more mindful of what is most importantly required in the present moment than fretting about the past or future.

While shopping, you can ask yourselves questions like, “Will I buy this if it were 2x the price?”, or “Do I need this stuff and do I see myself using it after 6 months?”. These will aid you before you make any impulsive purchase, rather than regretting later on.

EMOTIONAL AND MENTAL CLUTTER:

Let’s agree, we almost always ignore our emotional and mental clogs. The first step in de-cluttering these goes into analyzing the kind of clutter that is bothering you. Next, you can get yourselves out of the clutter by gathering the courage to face the situation. The strength comes from calming down your senses with practices like meditation, deep breathing and yoga. It’s generally not the outer clutter that’s more disturbing, rather it’s the inner one. Once you declutter and decode your inner self, the outside situations seems hardly anything and thus becomes easily manageable.

IS DIGITAL CLUTTER REALLY IMPORTANT?

The newest yet most common type of cluttering nowadays is the digital clutter. Yes, it's a real thing. Now, in a time where most of our work is getting accomplished through digital devices, it is a must to often indulge in removing the clutter from our devices to stay completely organized. Sorting out emails, having specific and dedicated folders for each type of document and deleting unwanted files every now and then are a few crucial ones.

Remember, digital decluttering is as important as removing physical clutter from your life to keep you away from that additional anxiety and stress (which we don’t want, do we?) !!

The bottom line is, to declutter any form of clutter, we need to make a decision, NOW.
